You can go from Piazza Indipendenza to Piazza San Marco through via XXVII Aprile and visit San Marco Museum and Accademia delle Belle Arti, here you can admire the famous David of Michelangelo.
Walking through the city center streets, you arrive at the Duomo Square, with its spectacular Brunelleschi cupola and its Opera del Duomo Museum. Here you find the original doors of the Baptistery and the never finished last Pietà of Michelangelo.
Walking down via Calzaiuoli you arrive at Piazza della Signoria with its amazing Loggia dei Lanzi and Palazzo Vecchio, then the Uffizi Gallery and Ponte Vecchio.
Walking direction Santa Maria Novella Train Station, approximately 600 meters from our hotel, you can visit the leather market of San Lorenzo, the Mercato Centrale, San Lorenzo Church, the Cappelle Medicee.
The Fortezza da Basso lies two blocks away from the Piazza dell’Indipendenza. It is an international fairs and congresses location.
The Hotel building is an historic mansion overlooking Piazza Indipendenza, designed by the architect Francesco Leoni between 1838 and 1842. Two bronze statues of two important Florentines, are in the square: Bettino Ricasoli created by Augusto Rivalta and Ubaldino Peruzzi (the first mayor of Florence) by Raffaello Romanelli. The surrounding 18th and 19th century palaces were once home to famous Italian and English writers who lived in the city and plaques now mark where they lived.
Two airports serve Florence: Amerigo Vespucci “Peretola”, 5 km north-west of the city centre and Galileo Galilei near Pisa, 90 km from Florence.
The number 62 bus runs from the Peretola airport to Stazione di Santa Maria Novella and takes around 20 minutes. The quicker SITA shuttle bus connects the airport to the SITA bus station just to the west of Piazza della Stazione.
Shuttle Bus connects Pisa airport to Florence, Piazzale Montelungo, in 1 hour.
Every 10 minutes there is a tram that connects Pisa airport to Pisa train station where you find a train to Florence every 30 minutes.
By car, from Milan and Bologna, drive direction Florence through the A1 motorway and use exit Firenze Nord. From Naples and Rome, drive direction Florence through the A1 motorway and use exit Firenze Sud.
From Santa Maria Novella Station: only 8 minutes walk to our hotel. Exit the station towards Piazza Alinari and walk along via Nazionale. Follow this street straight ahead until you arrive at Piazza dell’Indipendenza. Cross the square and you will arrive at the Hotel Donatello, number 23. You can reach the hotel also by bus or by taxi.
A1 Motorway (from Rome) - exit Firenze Sud: Leaving the motorway, simply follow the bull's-eye "Centro" signs or "Viali di Circonvallazione". At Piazza della Libertà, take Via Lorenzo il Magnifico the second left and continue straight ahead until you reach Via Santa Caterina d’Alessandria. On your right you will see the tree-lined Piazza Indipendenza.
A1 Motorway (from Milan) - exit Firenze Nord: Leaving the motorway, simply follow the bull's-eye "Centro" signs or "Viali di Circonvallazione. On passing Viale Strozzi and the Fortezza da Basso you will be in Viale Spartaco Lavagnini. Half of the way you see a pharmacy on your right side and there turn right, driving down Via Santa Caterina d’Alessandria. On your right you find Piazza Indipendenza, where our hotel is.
